Maurice "Smokie" LeBlanc was born in Richibucto, New Brunswick, but at six years of age moved to Québec. At 19 years of age Mr. LeBlanc enlisted in the Canadian Forces. He volunteered for the Korean War because of his involvement with the Militia. Mr. LeBlanc served with the Royal 22e Régiment in Korea. He served as a platoon commander, commanding the 8th Platoon Charlie Company, and later the 6th Platoon Baker Company.
Mr. LeBlanc has many memories from the Korean War, but one that will remain with his forever is witnessing a Korean Child walking after the child had suffered the loss of his feet during the war. He fondly remembers the comradeship between the Canadian soldiers.
Mr. LeBlanc remained with the Canadian Forces until he retired in 1983, after 35 years of service. He then worked in Business Administration with the Department of National Defence (DND) School Board in Petawawa, Ontario, and also in Germany. He retired from DND in 1993 because of the base closure in Germany.
Mr. LeBlanc lives in Beauport, Québec with his wife of 51 years, Monique. He is a member of the Korea Veterans Association, and a member and past President of the Royal 22e Régiment Association. This will be Mr. LeBlanc's second revisit to Korea, he visited during the 30th Anniversary, in 1983. He has two children and three grandchildren. His son, Paul, is currently a Chief Warrant Officer with the Canadian Forces and will lead the troops providing ceremonial support for the pilgrimage.
