Piering Into the Past

Allan Tanner is a Second World War Canadian merchant navy veteran who can often be found at Pier 21, sharing his wartime memories with some of the many visitors who visit this national historic site in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In fact, Allan is one of several veterans who volunteer as guides at Pier 21 which is an important part of Canada's wartime heritage. Close to half a million troops and other military personnel serving in Europe departed, or returned to, Canada through Pier 21. As well, 48,000 war brides and 3,000 British child evacuees arrived at Pier 21 from Europe. It's with the help of volunteers like Allan that Pier 21 strives to preserve a significant part of Canada's history for present and future generations. For more information on Pier 21, contact:
