New Alzheimer Program Now Available for Veterans

Veterans Affairs Canada has added a new program to its health-benefits package—the Safely Home Alzheimer Wandering Registry™.

The registry is a nationwide program, developed and run by the Alzheimer Society of Canada in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It assists police in finding those with Alzheimer’s who have wandered from their residence and are lost. Vital information on those registered is kept confidentially on a database and can be accessed by police anywhere in Canada.

Clients—or family members on their behalf—can register by contacting the Alzheimer Society of Canada, toll free at 1-800-616-8816.

Veterans Affairs Canada will pay for registration and identification bracelets or necklaces for clients who have Alzheimer’s, dementia or a similar condition, and are eligible under the Medical Supplies Program (Program #7) on their Veterans Affairs Canada Health Card.

Simply present the Veterans Affairs Canada Health Card when registering and the Alzheimer Society will confirm eligibility, supply the identification bracelet or necklace, and submit invoices directly to Veterans Affairs Canada for payment.
