Government of Canada to Mark the End of an Era

Ottawa -- Today, the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), announced plans for the Government of Canada to appropriately honour and recognize all Canadians and Newfoundlanders who served during the First World War. The announcement follows the death of John "Jack" Babcock, Canada's last known First World War Veteran, who passed away on February 18, 2010.

"While we have lost our last direct link to the First World War, we will continue to encourage young Canadians to remember and understand our proud military history and heritage," said Minister Blackburn. "The First World War is a defining part of the Canada we know today and it is a legacy that must be preserved for generations to come."

The Government of Canada will hold a national commemorative ceremony honouring all of Canada's First World War service men and women to pay tribute to their achievements and contributions. The ceremony will be held on "Vimy Ridge Day," Friday, April 9, 2010 in Ottawa at the National War Memorial-a symbol of the sacrifices of all Canadians who have served Canada in times of war in the cause of peace and freedom.

A number of other significant ceremonies of remembrance will be held on Friday, April 9 in locations across Canada and in our Allied nations of France and England. These will include international commemorative ceremonies that will take place at both the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, in France and at the Canada Memorial at Green Park, in London, England. In addition to this, some provinces and territories plan to conduct a commemorative ceremony in their respective capitals.

The Government of Canada is also providing the opportunity for the public to pay their respects by signing special Books of Reflection which will be on display at locations across Canada, including Parliament Hill, Rideau Hall, the Canadian War Museum as well as at each Provincial/Territorial Legislature. Books will also be available overseas at the Vimy Ridge National Historic Site, the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial National Historic Site, Canada House in London, England, and at the Canadian Forces Base in Kandahar. An online version of the Books of Reflection will also be available on the Veterans Affairs Canada Web site.

"Those who served our country during the First World War have often been called our Greatest Generation," said Minister Blackburn. "They earned that title. They deserve it. And the National Commemorative Ceremony will pay tribute to their great sacrifices, to their great achievements and to the many contributions they have made for all Canadians."

"We often take for granted our values and freedoms that this generation defended," said Minister Blackburn. "As we witness the end of an era, I encourage every Canadian to pause and reflect on the history that has made us who we are today."

"As the Prime Minister noted, the passing of Mr. Babcock marks the end of an era," says Minister Blackburn. "We as a country feel a tremendous sense of loss with the passing of our last known First World War Veteran, but we are committed to remembering the sacrifices of all those who served in the Great War."

Remembrance in the Age of the Web

Québec - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture) today launched a new Veterans Affairs Web feature called La force francophone, which aims to keep alive the memories of the men and women who sacrificed so much for our country. Participating with Minister Blackburn were five Veterans from the 82 who shared their recollections as part of this unique Web project, including the Honourable Gilles Lamontagne, former Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec and a former aviator with the Second World War bomber squadron, Les Alouettes.

"This Web site is truly unique in that it provides access to so many human-interest stories and to the never-before-revealed personal archives of Francophones from Quebec and across Canada," said Minister Blackburn. "Francophones from all parts of the country like the Honourable Gilles Lamontagne and Madame Cécile Grimard-Masson rolled up their sleeves and stepped in to help with the war effort. La force francophone will ensure that their stories are never forgotten."

La force francophone features more than 360 never-before-seen video vignettes, seven short documentaries, photo albums gleaned from the personal archives of the participants, and four interactive stories.

The project was made possible thanks to funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage's Canadian Culture Online - Canadian Memory Fund program. Other partners, such as Library and Archives Canada, the Directorate of History and Heritage at National Defence, and the National Film Board, provided content for La force francophone.

A Hundred Years of Naval Service Captured in Ice

Ottawa -- The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), Rear Admiral Nigel Greenwood, Assistant Chief of the Maritime Staff and Marie Lemay, Chief Executive Officer of the National Capital Commission (<acronym title="National Capital Commission">NCC), honoured the Centennial of Canada's Navy by illuminating an ice replica of <acronym title="Her Majesty's Canadian Ship">HMCS Sackville as part of Winterlude 2010.

<acronym title="Her Majesty's Canadian Ship">HMCS Sackville is the last remaining Flower-class corvette of the more than 120 built in Canada during the Second World War. One of the original members of the famous Barber Pole Group, the Sackville was commissioned in 1941. This group of ships, with its red and white barber pole stripes painted on the funnel, is still represented in our current navy.

"The victories we have achieved over the years would not have been possible without the tens of thousands of sailors who left the comforts of home and put out to sea," said Minister Blackburn. "Their contributions, their courage were every bit as remarkable. Every bit as crucial to the history of our country."

The Canadian Naval Centennial aims to build and strengthen Canadians' appreciation for our Navy from sea to sea to sea, and to promote the Navy's role within the Canadian Forces. The "Bring the Navy to Canadians" theme will see events across the country intended to honour the past and to remember those who gave their lives at sea, to showcase the current Navy and to reinforce the requirement for the Navy in the future.

"During this edition of Winterlude, we are pleased to have the opportunity to celebrate the Canadian Navy's Centennial," said Marie Lemay. "This ice sculpture, a replica of the <acronym title="Her Majesty's Canadian Ship">HMCS Sackville, highlights the accomplishments of those who have served, and continue to serve Canada."

The ice sculpture is located at "Rogers Crystal Garden" in Confederation Park, downtown Ottawa.
A Heartfelt Thank-You to Canada's Veterans

Ottawa -- The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), is encouraging Canadians to share valentine greetings with Veterans as a gesture of gratitude for their contributions to our country. This followed a visit by his Parliamentary Secretary, Greg Kerr, who distributed valentines to Korean War Veterans and other Veterans at the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre. The valentines for the Korea War Veterans were a special addition to the presentation this year, created by students in the Republic of Korea.

"Each year, children and other caring Canadians express their appreciation for our Veterans by designing and writing hand-made valentines," said Minister Blackburn. "It is heartwarming to know that Canadians have not forgotten the sacrifices and service of our country's heroes."

"Apart from the greetings for the Korean War Veterans, there are greetings coming from all parts of the country for Veterans residing at the Perley Rideau facility," said Mr. Kerr. "The fact that they took the time to create these cards makes my day ... and I know it makes theirs."

The Valentines for Vets program, run by Veterans Affairs Canada, helps Canadian schools, individuals and organizations send tens of thousands of Valentine's Day cards to Veterans in long-term care facilities across Canada. In its 14th year, the program will see Veterans in more than 2,000 long-term care facilities receive cards this Valentine's Day.

Valentines for Vets began in 1989 when the late American newspaper columnist, Ann Landers, made a call to action in her column, encouraging her readers to send cards on February 14 to Veterans in long-term care facilities.

Canada to Host 2012 International Veterans Administrations Ministerial Forum

Ottawa - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), participated this week in meetings that brought together his counterparts and other representatives from New Zealand, Australia and the United States.

In Wellington, New Zealand, member countries from the International Veterans Administrations Ministerial Forum discussed the challenges involved in meeting the needs of an aging population of traditional war service Veterans, and the needs of a growing population of modern-day Veterans. "This meeting showed me that the issues concerning Veterans are essentially the same, no matter the country, and that there is a lot of interest in Canada's New Veterans Charter. I was proud to note that Canada is leading the way in the practices and programs that we offer to our Veterans. Though we must continually strive for improvement, the Charter gives us a solid base on which to stand," said Minister Blackburn.

Furthermore, at Minister Blackburn's initiative, the member countries at the Forum discussed the relevance of inviting other countries to participate in these meetings, which take place every two years. "Given the large number of countries that work side by side with us in Afghanistan, we believe that the time has come to extend invitations to the Forum to certain countries who share similar challenges and issues. Many of those countries will see young Veterans coming home, and we all share the challenges posed by their return to civilian life," added the Minister.

These new member countries will be invited to participate in the next Forum, which will be held for the first time in Canada, at Minister Blackburn's invitation. "Admittedly, we all come from different countries, and have different points of view and priorities. Nonetheless, we share the same goal: providing the best services possible to the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our countries. This is why it is important to learn from the successes and challenges faced by each of our countries, so that we can use this information when it comes time for us to improve the programs we offer to our Veterans."

Minister of Veterans Affairs Joins Veterans This Holiday Season To Thank Generations of Men and Women in Uniform

Saint John - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today praised the generations of men and women whose Christmas and Hanukkah have been spent abroad to defend and protect our great country. The Minister was at Ridgewood Veterans' Wing visiting Veterans.

"It is at times like this that we understand how truly blessed our nation is to have so many courageous Canadians willing to sacrifice everything so that we can live in peace and freedom," said Minister Thompson.

Minister Thompson reflected on the many examples of great Canadian service during the holiday season - from the Battle of Hong Kong to the liberation of Ortona.

"This is what nations around the world think of when they see our Red Maple Leaf, or when they see 'Canada' on a brave soldier's uniform," said Minister Thompson. "They know that when the cause is just - when the cause is right - Canadians will be there."

"Thousands of Canadian soldiers are again answering the world's call this holiday season," said Minister Thompson. "They are serving in some of the world's most troubled places. Places like Afghanistan. And we are thinking of them. We are thinking of their families. And we are thinking of those who have lost loved ones. They have earned the right to be called our nation's truest heroes."

Government of Canada Honours 105-year-old Female Veteran

Lethbridge, AB - On behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Member of Parliament (Lethbridge) Rick Casson, presented greetings from the Prime Minister to Fay Meikle as she celebrated her 105th birthday among family and friends.

"Mrs. Meikle is a remarkable woman who is a source of pride to all women and all Canadians," said Minister Thompson. "She represents a generation of Canadian women who blazed a path for all women in the Canadian Forces. I know all Canadians join me in honouring her achievements and wishing her a very happy birthday."

Mrs. Meikle is Veterans Affairs Canada's oldest female client. She enlisted in the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRENS) at the same time as her son joined the Navy in 1943. She served on a number of ships throughout the Second World War and was a recipient of the Canadian Volunteer Service and War Medal.

"Veterans such as Mrs. Meikle came home after their service to build this country through their contributions in communities from coast to coast. They made the Canada we know today and it is our duty to always remember their great achievements and their great sacrifice," said Rick Casson, Member of Parliament for Lethbridge.

Minister Thompson Marks the 68th Anniversary of the Defence of Hong Kong

Ottawa - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today issued the following statement marking the 68th anniversary of the defence of Hong Kong.

"Almost seven decades ago, 1,976 seemingly ordinary Canadians sailed halfway around the globe with no idea of the fate that awaited them. They only knew that the world was calling, and they were prepared to answer. While defending the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong against a fierce enemy attack, Canadian soldiers would see major action for the first time during the Second World War. Of those who served in the 18-day Battle of Hong Kong, 290 would lay down their lives. On Christmas Day 1941, unable to fight any longer, the Allies had no choice but to surrender. The remaining Canadian troops, including two nursing sisters, were taken prisoners of war.

"We struggle to imagine how those who survived the fierce fighting were then able to endure almost four years as prisoners of war in some of the most cruel and desperate conditions possible. More than 260 Canadians died during that period. The war in the Far East would finally come to an end on August 15, 1945, but it would be December before many of the remaining Canadian prisoners of war finally returned home. These 1,976 courageous Canadians have earned their place among our nation's truest heroes.

"On this 68th anniversary of the defence of Hong Kong, we remember the brave Canadians who suffered so others would enjoy freedom, democracy and the rule of law. They fought for the same values and beliefs that our service men and women continue to defend today in areas of conflict around the world."

For more information on Canada's contribution in Hong Kong, visit the Veterans Affairs Canada <a href="http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=history/secondwar/asia/canHK" title="In the Second World War, Canadian soldiers first engaged in battle while defending the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong against a Japanese attack in December 1941.">Web site.

Government of Canada Opens Edmonton Operational Stress Injury Clinic

Edmonton -- The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and Marianne Stewart of Alberta Health Services announced today the opening of a clinic in Edmonton dedicated to the treatment and support of service men and women living with operational stress injuries (<acronym title="Operational Stress Injury">OSI) such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression or addiction.

"The Edmonton Operational Stress Injury Clinic ensures that specialized services are available to meet the mental health needs of those in and around Edmonton and northern Alberta who have served our country," said Minister Thompson. "Edmonton is the ninth clinic to open in this expanded network so that Veterans, active Canadian Forces members and other clients of Veterans Affairs, as well as their families, have access to a full range of quality care services."

The Edmonton OSI Clinic is a joint initiative funded by the Government of Canada and operated by Alberta Health Services. The funding was provided to double the number of <acronym title="Operational Stress Injury">OSI clinics across Canada in Budget 2007.

Marianne Stewart, Vice President, Edmonton Zone, joined Minister Thompson in announcing the opening of the clinic.

"Through close collaboration with the federal government, we began operations at a temporary location within an existing health centre to ensure we could serve Veterans as soon as possible. In the spring of 2010, we will hold an official opening when the Operational Stress Injury Clinic moves into its permanent location."

Greg Prodaniuk, Western Canada Region Coordinator for the Operational Stress Injury Social Support (<acronym title="Operational Stress Injury Social Support">OSISS) program, stresses how important it has been to establish services in Edmonton for military and ex-military clients and their families who feel the impact of operational stress injuries.

"When we meet with peers who are in need of help, it's essential for us to know they can get services nearby. The Edmonton <acronym title="Operational Stress Injury">OSI Clinic is a critical component in a range of mental health care services for Veterans."

The Edmonton Clinic will have the capacity to provide specialized mental health services to between 100 and 150 clients a year. These could include Veterans, Canadian Forces members and eligible current and former members of the <acronym title="Royal Canadian Mounted Police">RCMP who have suffered service-related operational stress injuries, as well as their families. In addition to standardized assessment, treatment, prevention and support services offered through the clinic, educational programs and individual, group, and family counselling services are available. This clinic is part of an integrated network with National Defence's operational trauma stress and support centres-a key part of mental health services for Canadian Forces members and Veterans.

Canadians Remember the Brutal Battle of Ortona in Italy

Ortona, Italy — The ancient town of Ortona holds grim memories for Canadians. Sixty-six years ago it was the site of some of the most bitter fighting of the Second World War. A Government of Canada delegation, led by the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, stopped in Ortona today as they visited a number of historic sites with great significance for Canadians in the Italian Campaign from 1943 to 1945. Local citizens joined the delegation in a moving floral-laying ceremony at the Price of Peace monument.

"The price for freedom during the Italian Campaign was high," Minister Thompson told the gathering of Veterans, Ortona citizens and visiting Canadian students, adding that nearly 6,000 Canadians lost their lives and some 20,000 were wounded or taken prisoner of war. "Freedom is never free. The values of democracy, freedom, human rights and the rule of law that Canadians fought and died for in Ortona and throughout the 20-month campaign are the same values our Canadian Forces men and women continue to protect today."

Today, Canada also paid special tribute to a Canadian soldier, Lance-Sergeant John Aubrey Matthew of The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment. A rededication ceremony was held at the Moro River Cemetery in honour of the soldier, whose grave has been identified. A grave marker formerly indicating "a soldier of the 1939-1945 war" now bears his name.

Over the next week, the members of the delegation which includes Veterans, representatives of Veterans' organizations and youth, will continue to visit historic sites relevant to Canadians in the Italian Campaign. Already, they have visited the Cassino War Cemetery where 855 Canadians lie buried and another 194 Canadians, who have no known grave, are remembered. They will also visit various other cemeteries where rows of white headstones are a sombre reminder of the cost of war.

Toronto — From 1943 to 1945, nearly 93,000 Canadians fought in the Italian Campaign. Of those, nearly 6,000 Canadian lost their lives. To mark this significant campaign, the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, will lead an official Government of Canada delegation in Italy from November 28 to December 5. Before they departed, there was an official send-off for delegates at Toronto's Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Participating were students from Leaside High School, Veterans from the Italian Campaign as well as Veteran residents of the hospital.

"Together, we will honour those courageous Canadians who served in the Italian Campaign, one of the longest and fiercest struggles of the Second World War," said Minister Thompson. "The values of peace and freedom for which they fought in Italy are the same values our military men and women continue to protect today."

The Canadian delegation travelling to Italy will include Second World War Veterans of the Italian Campaign, a modern-day Veteran, representatives of Veterans' organizations, a representative from the RCMP, youth, caregivers, parliamentarians and media.

The entire delegation will first participate in a commemorative ceremony at the Cassino War Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth cemetery in Italy. On December 1, Minister Thompson will lead a commemorative ceremony at the Price of Peace Monument in Ortona for the delegation and citizens of the town. The entire Canadian delegation will also attend a rededication ceremony for Lance-Sergeant John Aubrey Matthew of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment whose gravemarker will no longer read "a soldier of the 1939-1945 war," but will now bear his name. Minister Thompson will then lead the delegation to Rimini to honour Canadian troops who fought through six rivers to breach the Gothic Line, the last major German defence line that separated the Allies from Northern Italy.

"The Canadian Football League's 2009 Tribute to Veterans seeks to honour our Canadian Veterans, through a stunning program," said the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs. "This year, the <acronym title="Canadian Football League">CFL Tribute to Veterans will have reached tens of thousands of spectators and millions of viewers&mdashwhat a great way to let our Veterans know we cherish the freedom they fought for and are thankful for the sacrifices they made."

Minister of Veterans Affairs Launches Campaign to Identify and Help Homeless Veterans in Montréal

Montréal - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, joined representatives from local community organizations, partners from the Operational Stress Injury Social Support (OSISS) program, Wounded Warriors.ca and the Canadian Auto Workers to launch an outreach campaign to identify and help any homeless Veterans in the Montréal area.

"Our government has been working very hard-right across the country-to identify homeless Veterans and those who might be at risk of becoming homeless to get them the help they need," said Minister Thompson. "We believe our ever-expanding efforts are working to help vulnerable Veterans, but even one homeless hero is one too many. This campaign in Montréal will help us make sure every Veteran is getting the services and benefits he or she has earned and deserves."

The aim of the initiative is to measure the extent of homelessness among Veterans and help those identified access Veterans Affairs Canada programs and services including rehabilitation services, health care, employment support, family services and financial or disability benefits.

With the help of its partners, Veterans Affairs Canada wants to establish a relationship of trust with any homeless Veterans. The Department is working with partners from the OSISS program to make community groups that work with the homeless population aware of its programs and services.

Another key partner in the establishment of this campaign is Wounded Warriors.ca, which provided a vehicle for outreach teams to visit shelters and an emergency fund to provide immediate help to any homeless Veterans.

"In partnering with Veterans Affairs Canada, we reaffirm our commitment to helping soldiers and Veterans wherever their wounds may lead them. It is by being present on the streets and treating invisible wounds that we can help them," said Wayne Johnston, president and founder of Wounded Warriors.ca.

Jacques Gourde, the Member of Parliament for Lotbinière-Chutes-de-la-Chaudière and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and Government Services and to the Minister of National Revenue, said the community effort reflects Canada's determination to serve those who have always been there to serve our great nation.

"Our Veterans dedicated themselves to their missions when we needed them," said Mr. Gourde, who attended the announcement with Minister Thompson. "It is now our responsibility to be there for them when they need us."

Message from the Minister of Veterans Affairs

Ottawa — The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following message on the occasion of Remembrance Day 2009:

"As Canadians, we are fortunate to live in the best country in the world, and we owe much of it—if not all of it—to the brave men and women who have always been willing to defend our way of life. As Canadians, it is our solemn duty to remember their accomplishments and sacrifices.

"This Remembrance Day, our government is asking Canadians, "How will you remember?"

"How will you remember the achievements of our soldiers who have served on peacekeeping missions and military operations throughout the world?

"How will you remember the men and women who stepped forward to defend our peace and freedom in the First and Second World Wars, and in Korea?

"Or the courageous men and women who sacrifice so much in Afghanistan today?

"Today, we will join together and pause for a moment of silence-a moment to think about how we will remember the countless contributions of our Veterans. To think about the many young men and women who have sacrificed so much so that we might see a better future.

"These brave men and women-our Canadian Veterans-have earned the right to be called our nation's truest heroes.

"As we mark Remembrance Day, I encourage you to make remembrance more than something you feel—make it something you do. Show your appreciation for our Veterans-for their sacrifices and achievements. Show how you remember—not just today, but every day."

Veterans Honoured at Senators Game
Minister of Veterans Affairs and 1948 Gold Medalist Drop Puck

Ottawa -- The Ottawa Senators and Veterans Affairs Canada worked together to honour Canada's Veterans on the eve of Remembrance Day. A Veteran who was a member of the 1948 <acronym title="Royal Canadian Air Force">RCAF Flyers Olympic Gold Medal winning hockey team joined the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, for a ceremonial puck drop at the Senators' game with the Edmonton Oilers tonight.

"It's wonderful to see the many different ways Canadians remember--from large gestures to simple acts of appreciation," said Minister Thompson. "We can never fully repay the great debt we owe our Veterans. But we do have a sacred duty to honour our nation's truest heroes."

The Minister joined <acronym title="Royal Canadian Air Force">RCAF Flyer Ted Hibberd at centre ice for the dropping of the puck.

The 1948 <acronym title="Royal Canadian Air Force">RCAF Flyers, in true Canadian spirit, overcame great odds to win Gold in Switzerland. Never given much of a chance to win, the team came together at just the right time and rose to the occasion.

"It should come as no surprise to Canadians that the 1948 <acronym title="Royal Canadian Air Force">RCAF Flyers accomplished such greatness in the Olympics," said Minister Thompson. "Having served in the military, they were ready for their dangerous opponents. We salute them for their determination and dedication on and off the ice."

This year, during Veterans Week, Canadians are being asked to take remembrance one step further. Show how you remember by attending a Remembrance Day ceremony, visiting a local cenotaph or monument, sharing your thoughts of remembrance online, or wearing a poppy with pride. During Veterans' Week, we not only pay tribute to all Canadian Veterans, we continue to honour those who serve our country today in Afghanistan and other areas of conflict," said Phil McColeman, Member of Parliament for Brantford.

This year during Veterans' Week, from November 5 to 11, take remembrance one step further. Show how you remember by attending a Remembrance Day ceremony, visiting the local cenotaph or monument, sharing your thoughts of remembrance online, or wearing a poppy with pride.
One-Millionth Student Hears Veterans' Stories: Government of Canada Congratulates the Historica-Dominion Institute

Toronto - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, congratulated the Historica-Dominion Institute and its volunteers today, as they marked a milestone for the Memory Project. Thanks to the Memory Project, one million students across Canada have had the opportunity to talk to Veterans, ask questions and learn about our military history through first-hand accounts.

"The greatest gift we can give our Veterans is the gift of remembrance," said Minister Thompson. "Through the dedicated work and enthusiasm of the Historica-Dominion Institute and the Memory Project, we are sharing that gift-one story at a time."

This Veterans' Week, Canadians across the country are answering the question: How will you remember? The Historica-Dominion Institute's Memory Project is just one example of how communities and organizations are helping engage Canadians in remembrance. The Memory Project includes a Speakers' Bureau, bringing Veterans to classrooms and community groups across Canada.

"The Memory Project is delighted to announce that, nine years after the project began, we have reached one million students. This is an important milestone for us, but even more so, it is a testament to the continued dedication of our Veteran volunteers," said Jeremy Diamond, Managing Director, Historica-Dominion Institute. "Because of our Memory Project Veterans, one million young Canadians have heard stories of service and sacrifice and have had the privilege of meeting a living example of Canadian history."

Last fall, Minister Thompson announced that the Government of Canada would provide funding of up to '450,000 over three years to the Historica-Dominion Institute for the Memory Project. The funding support is provided jointly through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund and through the Canadian Studies Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
Senate Ceremony Launches Veterans' Week 2009

OTTAWA -- The Honourable Noël A. Kinsella, Speaker of the Senate of Canada, the Honourable Peter Milliken, Speaker of the House of Commons, together with the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, officially launched Veterans' Week 2009 today during the annual ceremony held in the Senate Chamber.

"Sixty-five years ago, the Italian Campaign marked Canada's full participation in the Western Allies' triumphant return to the continent of Europe. Today, we remember and pay tribute to the many thousands young Canadian men and women who served our country and so valiantly fought to liberate Italy and give us the freedoms and liberties that we enjoy today," said Senate Speaker Kinsella.

"We will not forget, nor we will let our children forget, that we live in peace and prosperity today because of the courage and perseverance of those Canadian men and women who came before us, and served their nation, its allies, and the cause of freedom, during the Second World War", said House of Commons Speaker Milliken.

November 5-11 is Veterans' Week. It is a time to recognize and remember the contribution of ordinary men and women who performed extraordinary deeds on behalf of their country and fellow Canadians.

"It's been said that "a nation reveals itself not only by the men and women it produces, but also by those it honours and remembers," said Minister Thompson. "To the Veterans of the Italian Campaign, we are humbled to be in your presence today. Though we know it is small in comparison to your great sacrifice, we offer the only two words that can begin to express what we feel every day: Thank you. Thank you for allowing us to live in the best country in the world."

This year marks the 65th anniversary of the Italian Campaign, a 20-month Allied effort during the Second World War which led to the liberation of Italy. More than 93,000 Canadians served in the Italian Campaign. Of those who served, some never returned home. They made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our Canadian values of peace and freedom.

This year during Veterans' Week, Canadians are being asked to take remembrance one step further: by attending a Remembrance Day ceremony, visiting the local cenotaph or monument, sharing their thoughts of remembrance online, or wearing a poppy with pride.

Ottawa -- This Veterans' Week, November 5 to 11, Canadians across the country will join together to show how they remember and honour our Veterans.
"We are reminded of the achievements and sacrifices of our Veterans every day. But during Veterans' Week, we take remembrance one step further.
Candlelight Tribute Honours Canada's Veterans

OTTAWA — In a moving ceremony this evening at Lansdowne Park, the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and His Worship Larry O'Brien, Mayor of the City of Ottawa, joined more than 500 Veterans and 100 youth in a candlelight tribute to mark Veterans' Week 2009.

"The sacrifice of our Veterans helped light the path to peace and freedom," said Minister Thompson. "Tonight our candles symbolize our continuing respect and thanks for those who served their country with dignity, respect and bravery."

The evening's tribute consisted of a wreath-laying and candlelight procession with dignitaries, Veterans and Canadian Forces members paired with Cadets, Scouts, Cubs and students.

"2009 marks the 9th consecutive year that the City of Ottawa has had the honour and the privilege to co-host the Candlelight Tribute to Veterans with Veterans Affairs Canada," said Mayor O'Brien. "The event is an opportunity for all of us to remember and give thanks for the supreme sacrifices that were made and continue to be made on our behalf."

Candlelight ceremonies began in the Netherlands as a symbol of gratitude for those who liberated the country during the Second World War. In 1995, during a special ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands, Dutch children placed lit candles on the graves of Canadian soldiers and the candles remained lit overnight in silent tribute. Since then, commemorative candlelight tributes have become annual ceremonies, not only in the Netherlands, but across Canada as well.

This year during Veterans' Week Canadians are asked to take remembrance one step further.
Minister of Veterans Affairs Celebrates 65th Anniversary of Department

Charlottetown — The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today marked the 65th anniversary of the Department of Veterans Affairs at its Charlottetown head office. Minister Thompson was joined by local Veterans and Veterans Affairs employees.

Faced with a wave of nearly one million Veterans of the Second World War, the Government of Canada created the Department of Veterans Affairs on October 18, 1944.

"Veterans Affairs has a longstanding tradition of serving Canada's Veterans," said Minister Thompson. "This was the case sixty-five years ago and it remains the case today. The Department exists to repay the nation's debt of gratitude to the remarkable men and women who served-and continue to serve-our country."

Also participating in today's event were Lieutenant Governor Barbara Hagerman, Premier Robert Ghiz, Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee and Dan MacDonald Junior, son of the late Daniel J. MacDonald, after whom the main Veterans Affairs building in Charlottetown was named. A Veteran of the Second World War, Daniel J. MacDonald was a Minister of Veterans Affairs and key driver in the Department's move to Prince Edward Island.

The creation of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the evolution of programs to meet the needs of a new generation of Veterans had a tremendous impact on Veterans services and on broader health and social services in Canada.

Today, the Department continues to evolve to meet the needs of Canada's traditional and modern-day Veterans. For more information about Veterans Affairs, visit www.vac-acc.gc.ca.

Stamp and Students Honour Canadian Veterans -- "How will you remember?"

Ottawa - This year during Veterans' Week, Canadians will be asked the question: How will you remember? To start things off, the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and the Honourable Robert Merrifield, Minister Responsible for Canada Post, gathered with Veterans and youth at the Rideau Canal Junior Ranks Mess to unveil a new commemorative stamp. Following the unveiling, students from A.Y. Jackson Secondary School revealed a special video they created to show how they are remembering.

"It's wonderful to see the many different ways Canadians remember—from large gestures to simple acts of appreciation," stated Minister Thompson. "We can never fully repay the great debt we owe our Veterans. But we do have a sacred duty to honour our service men and service women ... to honour our heroes. And this is the greatest gift we can give our Veterans—the gift of remembrance."

"The Lest We Forget stamp will give Canadians the opportunity to share a piece of remembrance with family and friends across the country and around the world," said The Honourable Robert Merrifield about the newly unveiled Canada Post stamp. Six million copies of the stamp are now in circulation featuring a close-up image of the National War Memorial in Ottawa.

"My students were so excited to take up the challenge, and create something unique to honour our Veterans," said Susan Hemstreet, history teacher at A.Y. Jackson Secondary School. The Grade 10 class created their video with the help of images and footage found on the new <a href="sub.cfm?source=feature/remember" title="How Will You Remember?">How will you remember? section of Veterans Affairs Canada's Web site. The students will now be able to share their video with others through Veterans Affairs Canada's Web site, Facebook page or YouTube channel.

This year, take remembrance one step further. Show how you remember by attending a Remembrance Day ceremony, visiting a local cenotaph, sharing your thoughts of remembrance online, or wearing a poppy with pride.
