History

History

The Italian Campaign began in the early morning of July 10, 1943, when Canadian and British troops landed close to the southern tip of Sicily. Canadians would gain control of the island after more than four weeks of fighting through hundreds of kilometres of difficult mountainous country. After losing Sicily, the Germans were determined to hold the mainland. By taking advantage of mountain peaks and swift rivers they turned the length of the Italian peninsula into a series of defensive lines heavily defended by machine gun nests, barbed wire, land mines, and artillery positions.
