
Mr. Ivan Gunter was born on December 14, 1920, in Coe Hill, Ontario. He enlisted with the service on October 6, 1939, in Picton, Ontario.
From July 1943, until March 1945, Mr. Gunter served in Italy with the Hastings Prince Edward Regiment. He was part of the intelligence section of the regiment, responsible for such items as war diaries, maps and scouting. During his six and a half years with the military, Mr. Gunter was awarded the Military Medal in Sicily and was highly recognized for his efforts. "I had lots of offers for corporal, but they were killing corporals," he said. Despite the offers, he remained a private for the duration of his service.
In 1985, Mr. Gunter retired from his position as postmaster. He and his wife, Irene (an English war bride), have two sons and one daughter. They are also the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
