Lance Corporal Maurice White

Mr. Maurice White was born in Coldwater, Ontario on January 2, 1925. At age two he relocated to Grassland, Alberta, where his family established the farm he grew up on with his six brothers and nine sisters. He enlisted in Edmonton on January 7, 1942, and was assigned to the Loyal Edmonton Regiment.

Mr. White served in Italy for two years and was part of the initial invasion force in Sicily. His tour in Italy was interrupted from May to December 1944, when he was assigned to the First Special Service Force, also known as the "Devil's Brigade." While in Italy, Mr. White served in a number of capacities, including as a sniper, company runner and section leader.

Returning to Canada in 1946, Mr. White worked first in a logging camp and then picking fruit in British Columbia orchards. In 1952 he began work in the oil industry and worked as a technical engineer until his retirement in 1985.

Mr. White is very busy with volunteer work, having worked for a fitness centre for nine years. He and his wife, Elsie, are also very involved with the provincial museum's archaeology program where they have worked for over 20 years on projects dealing with everything from prehistoric material to aboriginal artifacts. The couple have two sons.
